Why Free the Nipple Campaign is Not Empowering Women

The campaign “Free the Nipple” started as a movement to promote women's equal right to go topless in public. a right that men have and are freely allowed anywhere. Directed by Lina Esco the film "Free The Nipple" tells the story of a group of women in New York City who go topless in public to fight the censorship of women's bodies.  The movement started as a campaign to counter social taboos and free exposure of breasts in public places.

I’m not really in favor of literally seeing women walking down the streets topless. The film however helps in raising awareness about free equality, problems of breastfeeding in public places, sexual objectification and women empowerment. All these problems and difficulties are still prevalent throughout the world. The campaign has helped a lot in raising awareness about the inequality and helps in raising awareness about top freedom for women. However, I don’t really believe in the campaign for breast equality. Women and men have different bodies that serve different purposes and do not serve as a sort of inequality. The director of the film Lina Esco also asserts that the campaign does not literally advocate women being bare-chested all the times. In fact its purpose is to change the public perception of women’s bodies and to highlight the blatant gender inequality.

It is also important to take into account of many women who are against literally exposing their breasts in public. Just because men walk freely or are allowed to be bare-chested doesn't mean women should do the same. That's not how equality work. Women and men have different separate bodies and each has special attributions. Men admire women and women the same and give equal respect. Some women are literally in support of walking bare-chested everywhere. To me this is where the campaign fails miserably and always will be. For the love of God, is this really necessary?

According to the website: “Free The Nipple is a film, an equality movement, and a mission to empower women across the world. We stand against female oppression and censorship, both in the United States and around the globe.” In the film they make a very good point about how in some places breast feeding in public places are not allowed. They also make a good point about the censorship of nipples or breast feeding on Facebook. Well to be honest, women should feel free about breast feeding in public places. I've noticed many women in India covering their babies with shawls or with part of their sarees while breast feeding in public places. And to compound to their miseries, India is extremely hot where temperature soars above 40'c. I personally feel women should openly breast feed their babies without having to hide anything. Men in India are known be expert onlookers. Many a time I have seen men staring at women without even blinking. God help! Being myself a man, I think we should help women to feel free in any possible way as we can.

On the other side, campaign started to sound a little flaky when founder Lina Esco said women should be able to go to the beach topless if men can. Oops is this not childish or ridiculous? Why is she bringing this stupid story up? Is this the most important issue women are currently facing? It was totally ridiculous and laughable when Lina Esco said Miley Cyrus has got on board. “Her ideology is very aligned with the message of the film and she just decided to step up and speak about it." Can't she find another woman?
Well good job Lina Esco Miley Cyrus has been continuing her support for women empowerment demonstrating her ideology by twerking and twerking and twerking all around with her tongue out all the way from America to the far East or like the longest train in the world. I think CCR's famous song "Rocking all Over the World" should change the title exclusively for Miley Cyrus to "Twerking all Over the World."

It is also worth mentioning that many celebrities are using this campaign for their own personal interest to gain publicity. This campaign has no clear cut plans and ideologies and is only a campaign where women will cheekily post selfies week in week out without actually having to do with the real cause of the campaign. And the point is, this campaign is not really necessary. This is the kind of campaign that may have a very good reason and valid point for coming into being. But the problem is it becomes an excuse for people to show off. In this case, both their boobs and their faux activism.Wake up!
