Free Country Free Worship

Image
The recent spat of attacks on churches in New Delhi bring us into question again. Why is the Prime Minister Narendra Modi silent on this serious issue? Where is the freedom of religion? India is a secular country no matter how hard the Bharatiya Janata Party try to impose the Hindutva policy. As a christian its sickening to see the the heinous act of destroying the place of worship; burning altars burgling inside the church, heaven help this has to stop. The silence of the PM has only added more zealousness to continue these brutalities.     India is a land of so many different religions. In one way its something beautiful and something to really admire about. What will be the holy grail for the people to live as one and respect other religions without hurting something that others considers sacred? It is only in our own hands. The respect will come out only from within us. It is something which cannot be taught by someone else. The sense of reveren...

Why Free the Nipple Campaign is Not Empowering Women

Image
The campaign “Free the Nipple” started as a movement to promote women's equal right to go topless in public. a right that men have and are freely allowed anywhere. Directed by Lina Esco the film "Free The Nipple" tells the story of a group of women in New York City who go topless in public to fight the censorship of women's bodies.   The movement started as a campaign to counter social taboos and free exposure of breasts in public places.              I’m not really in favor of literally seeing women walking down the streets topless. The film however helps in raising awareness about free equality, problems of breastfeeding in public places, sexual objectification and women empowerment. All these problems and difficulties are still prevalent throughout the world. The campaign has helped a lot in raising awareness about the inequality and helps in raising...

Freedom of Speech should not be used to Insult Personalities that Others Consider Sacred

The terrorist attack on the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo on 7 th January 2015 — which had also published Muhammad cartoons in the past — triggered debate about satire, humour and free speech. We believe passionately in freedom of speech and expression. But free speech, as the US and UK newspapers who declined to republish the Charlie Hebdo cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed after the attack demonstrate, means the freedom to decide what to publish. It doesn’t mean publishing everything and anything. Of course there is no denying the fact that the recent attack in Paris is totally against the Islamic laws and nothing can justify the attack and I’m not trying to defend that. But the explicit nature of the drawings made it inevitable they would cause offence. Many Muslims regard any depiction of the Prophet as blasphemous and one can’t deny that. People have spoken out that publications like Charlie Hebo are an essential element of a free society. Even at their most provocative,...
