Gender Roles: Redefining Gender Stereotypes

Image
What are gender roles? Gender roles are a preconceived set of ideas whereby men and women are arbitrarily assigned certain roles determined by their gender. It causes unequal and unfair treatment in most cases because of a person’s gender. Although massive progress has been made towards gender equality, women are still held back because of their gender. Gender relations remain unbalanced to a great extent. Women are still held back in many areas— limiting their education no matter how promising they may be, hindering their freedom and barring their civil rights. Gender stereotypes dictate that women need to learn certain things starting from learning how to cook, to cleaning the house and keeping the house clean.             So how do we unleash the full potential of women? In order to ensure gender equality, we need to ponder seriously as to why women are discriminated in the first place. The issue which really needs add...

About the playwright Alice Erya Gerstenberg (2 August 1885 – 28 July 1972) was an American playwright, actress, and activist best known for her experimental and feminist drama. Her plays demonstrate her feminist tendencies – critiquing the social roles and decision which constrained women of the time. About the play: Ever Young Ever Young is a one-act play set in the backdrop of the 1920s. This was the time when significant changes were taking place in the country. This was due to the changing attitudes towards the place of women in society. The number of working women had increased by as much as 25 percent and women had been granted the right to vote. The play revolves around a conversation between four women who are free and allowed to know the changes happening in the society. Characters: Mrs. William Blanchard: Mrs. Blanchard is an elderly woman of about 70. She is thin, a trifle bent with age and needs a walking stick. However, her smile is illuminatingly young...

Faux Feminism

Image
Feminism is the belief and aim that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men. Feminism at its commencement by popular definition was to acquire the right to vote for women. But although suffrage could be rightly termed as the focal point which ignited feminism, the word has evolved to embrace multifarious beliefs deemed favourable for the overall elevation of women. Feminism is about gender equality, and not gender sameness. Men and women need to have equal rights and privileges. Having said that, men and women are different, and have contradistinctive qualities and attributes, and that’s something which we should revere and hold in respect. If we reminisce about the wave of feminist movements in the past, the purpose was to get equal status as men which include the right to vote vis-à-vis the role of women in society. It also gave emphasis on the issues of gender and race inequality, and the campaign for women’s rights and interests. Mary Wollston...

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are unfit to be president

Image
Donald Trump, the man who said “Grab them by the P***y” is not fit to be president of the United States. Republicans must be left reeling themselves for electing Trump to be their nominee. Republicans ought to be very much embarrassed of themselves. Hillary Clinton is equally unfit to be president of the Unites States for different reasons. She is a woman who defended her husband—a sexual predator at the same time calls herself a woman fighting for women’s rights. She is also responsible for bad judgement on many disastrous foreign policies—Libya and Iraq. If Donald Trump is a sexist, Hillary Clinton is a modern-day Lady Macbeth. She also had a hand for so many bloodsheds. It’s laughable that the mainstream media are not exposing the dark side of Hillary Clinton. They are only interested in exposing Donald Trump. It appears like there is a campaign against Donald Trump to put him down. There are people out there simply going with the flow of the mainstream media wi...

You probably might have seen Omran’s image or video which has been circulating on social media. His stunned face is a stark symbol of his country and the devastation and suffering which they have to endure. The poor boy was so shocked that he couldn’t even shed his tears. He was not crying at any point during the rescue. Let’s not forget, he is a five year old boy. He is supposed to be out in the sunshine and playing with his friends. However the greediness and lust for power have overshadowed everything and what remains is the dark horrific world.  It was a soul-wrenching moment when he raises his left hand and wipes the blood off his face c...

Delhi needs the old Arvind Kejriwal back

Ever felt like something is missing in Arvind Kejriwal the Chief Minister of Delhi? Well he certainly seems to look so. The hunger and the thirst to serve for the common people's cause and uproot corruptions were his key agendas before he enter into the array of politics. The sheer determination and do or die attitude seem to have withered like a flower. Born on 16th August, 1968 no one would have expected this man to lead Delhi with such strong majority. He is the seventh current chief minister of Delhi after they won the election with a resounding victory by defying all odds. In 2012, he launched the Aam Aadma Party and defeated Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the 2013 Delhi Assembly Election. His enthusiasm and passion to fight for the common was just breath-taking. In fact it was Arvind Kejriwal who somehow made me take some interest in politics. I started following his press conferences as he kicked of his campaign pointing out the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders n...
